Common malfunctions and solutions for magnetic separators

Are you familiar with the common malfunctions of magnetic separators during daily operation? Below, we will introduce some common magnetic separator malfunctions and quick solutions to address your urgent needs!
I. Obstructions inside the magnetic separator
Minor issues may cause scratches on the drum skin, while severe issues may jam the drum or tear the drum skin. In such cases, stop the machine immediately and remove the obstruction. Strictly prohibit dropping bolts, nuts, wires, and other metal objects into the magnetic separator. To prevent large ore pieces from entering the dry magnetic separator with the pulp, install a screen at the feeding point to block large pieces and debris, and clean it regularly.
II. Magnetic block detachment inside the drum
This will cause a clicking sound from the drum; severe cases may tear the drum skin. Stop the machine immediately for repair. To prevent further magnetic block detachment, use a thin copper sheet to wrap the magnetic system during repair.
III. Clogging of the bottom blow-off water pipe in the counter-current type
This causes ore sand accumulation at the pipe outlet or blockage of the working gap. If suspected, stop the machine for inspection. Sometimes, the blow-off water pipe outlet is not blocked, but a foreign object in the working gap causes blockage. The malfunction is manifested by the absence of concentrate on the drum skin at that location. In this case, use high-pressure water to remove the blockage.
IV. Holes worn in the trough
For example, if the middle layer plate or tailings pipe of a counter-current type trough is worn through, the raw ore will short-circuit into the tailings, increasing the tailings grade. If the tailings grade suddenly increases and remains high, it may indicate a leak in the trough.
V. If a strong magnetic separator has been used for many years, and the properties of the raw ore have not changed, but the tailings grade is gradually increasing,
This may be due to the degradation of the magnetic block performance and a decrease in magnetic field strength. Measure the field strength of the magnetic separator. If the magnetic field strength is significantly reduced, recharge the magnets.
VI. Mechanical malfunctions
Such as wear and tear of transmission gears, loose or misaligned screws, and motor failures, should be addressed promptly.
VII. Overheating and abnormal noise of the magnetic separator motor
Causes: a. Poor bearing lubrication or severe wear and tear; b. Fan blade detachment or wear; c. Poor contact or disconnection in the switch circuit, or single-phase running; d. Low voltage. Solution: Notify the maintenance worker or electrician.
VIII. Tailings grade suddenly increases and remains high
Cause: A hole is worn in the magnetic separator trough, causing the raw ore to short-circuit into the tailings, increasing the tailings grade. Solution: Notify the maintenance crew, stop the machine, and weld the hole in the trough.
IX. No concentrate in a certain section of the drum
Cause: The bottom blow-off water pipe in the counter-current type may be clogged due to scaling, causing ore sand accumulation at the pipe outlet or blockage of the working gap. Sometimes, the blow-off water pipe outlet is not blocked, but a foreign object in the working gap causes blockage at that location. Solution: Use high-pressure water to remove accumulated ore or stop the machine and remove the blockage. If the water pipe is clogged, clear it promptly.
